A Message from Pastor James Klockau

September will be here before you know it, which means the return of Children's Church and the arrival of Sunday School at Grace. The first day of Sunday School classes will be September 22nd.

Some of you have already volunteered to be teachers/assistants for Sunday School. Others of you I have included in this email because I hope you will consider helping out. The goal is that no one will need to commit to more than one Sunday per month, because we will have enough volunteers to rotate.

Deacon Nina Hunt from Grace Church and Astoria Lutheran School has volunteered to be the Sunday School coordinator. Yeah! She is a retired teacher and has many years experience teaching Sunday School at Augustana Church. Unfortunately, Nina has to have knee surgery on September 5th, so she will be out of the picture for a couple of months. In the meantime, I will do my best to pull everything together.

The way the schedule will work on Sundays is that Children's Church as we have come to know it will take place beginning at 10:00 a.m. (PLEASE NOTE: This is a change from 9:00 a.m. I will explain that further in a minute.) Children's Church will happen from 10:00-10:20, at which time the children will be dismissed to go downstairs for Sunday School, where they will receive a lesson on the Bible story for the day and make a craft related to it. The parents will (hopefully) remain in church where they will join the members of the Grace congregation for "Adult" Church, meaning an abbreviated liturgy that will include a sermon and Holy Communion. At 11:00 a.m. everyone, adults and children, will meet in the Blue Room for fellowship and refreshments.

This new schedule is designed to accomplish a couple of things: some parents have been requesting a Sunday School experience for their children, where a lesson can be presented in more detail than happens in Children's Church; also, my hope is that this combined worship experience will bring together the families of Children's Church and our Grace congregation members. This is vital to the future mission and ministry of Grace Church and Astoria Lutheran School. Our mission is to reach out to the people of our community, welcoming them into a place where faith can be nurtured and explored and service to the community and the world can be encouraged.

If you are willing and able to participate as a leader in this endeavor of Children's Church/Sunday School, please respond to this email and let me know. I am proposing a PLANNING MEETING to go over the details (responsibilities, schedule, curriculum, etc.) on either SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 7th at 9:00 a.m. or SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 8th at 9:00 a.m. Let me know if either or both work for you. If you are unable to help us out at this time, I understand, and I hope that we will continue to see each other in church.

I hope you are having a great summer.

All the best,
Pastor James Klockau
